Amber Oud Rouge is the most sober and the most carefully built of the range: three movements, no frills.
— The opening is dominated by saffron, the signature spice of Gulf perfumery. Saffron is not hot, it is leathery and lightly honeyed, and it gives the fragrance its character from the first second. A few floral notes soften it.
— The heart is the centre of gravity: ambery woods and ambergris. Ambergris is one of the most precious materials in perfumery — warm, salty, enveloping — and it is what creates that impression of warm skin you notice on the great orientals.
— The base is dry and resinous: fir resin and cedar. The fir resin brings a balsamic freshness that keeps the whole thing from turning heavy.

— The opening pairs saffron with bitter almond. Bitter almond is a confectionery note, lightly powdery, which immediately rounds off the leathery side of the saffron. It is a soft start, not an attack.
— The heart is Egyptian jasmine, one of the richest jasmines there is, supported by cedar. The cedar acts as a backbone: it keeps the jasmine from becoming heady.
— The base is warm and long: ambergris, woods and musk. That is what stays on the skin after several hours.
A late-afternoon and evening fragrance, at its best in autumn and winter. The bottle is black with ruby edging and gold details — one of the finest of the range, and that counts when it is a gift. Two sprays.

Tobacco Edition is the warmest of the Amber Oud range, and the easiest to recognise with your eyes closed.
— The opening is frankly spiced: cinnamon, black pepper and ginger, laid over a tobacco leaf. Tobacco in perfumery has nothing to do with a cigarette — it is the dried leaf, soft and sweet, used forever for its almost honeyed richness.
— The heart is a real dessert of spices: vanilla, clove, star anise, tonka bean and cocoa, with incense over the top. The tonka bean brings that scent of almond and cut hay that holds gourmand orientals together.
— The base keeps the blond tobacco and adds dried fruits and woody notes. Soft, dry and enveloping all at once.
An autumn and winter fragrance, for the evening, for a wool jumper. To be honest: it is warm and sweet, so you either love it or you do not — anyone looking for something fresh should move on. But for those who like this register, it is one of the best value bottles on the market. Two sprays are enough; it projects well.
