Oud After Dark

Oud After Dark is the most accomplished of the Amourouds, and the one with the richest composition — fourteen materials announced.

— The opening is fruity and spiced: pepper, saffron, osmanthus, apricot and carnation. Osmanthus is a small Chinese flower that smells of both apricot and leather — one of the most expensive and most interesting materials in perfumery. With the apricot beside it, the effect is doubled.

— The heart is dark and velvety: rare oud, olibanum, purple plum, suede and Turkish rose. Suede is the reversed leather — soft, powdery, with no rough edges. The plum brings the candied fruit that keeps the oud from being austere.

— The base is warm and long: ebony wood, Virginia tobacco, amber, vanilla orchid and musk. Virginia tobacco is softer and sweeter than the pipe tobacco of Oud Tabac.

An autumn and winter fragrance, for the evening, unisex with a masculine leaning. Two sprays.

Elixir La Rose Noire belongs to Amouroud's Elixir collection, the house's most concentrated line — these are extraits de parfum, not eaux de parfum. That is what justifies a 75 ml bottle at the price of a 100 ml elsewhere.

Its olfactive pyramid is published nowhere: neither on the house's own site, nor at the specialist distributors. All the resellers say about it is that it “travels the idea of a dark rose”.

Dark Orchid is the most wearable of the Amourouds, and the easiest to give as a gift.

— The opening is luminous: mandarin, black gardenia and Sicilian bergamot. Gardenia is a creamy, almost milky white flower; in its “black” version, it is treated darker and greener.

— The heart is a gust of white flowers: Grasse jasmine, ylang-ylang, lotus wood and black orchid. Grasse jasmine is the most expensive in the world — it is what gives that slightly heady sensation of luxury. Orchid in perfumery has no scent of its own: it is a reconstructed accord, vanillic and powdery.

— The base is deep and earthy: Indonesian patchouli, Mysore sandalwood, incense and vanilla. Mysore sandalwood is one of the most precious woods in perfumery, creamy and milky.

An autumn and winter fragrance, for the evening, unisex with a feminine leaning. Far more consensual than Oud Tabac: white flowers over patchouli is a construction that has outlasted fashions for fifty years. Two to three sprays.
