Royal Jasmine is the most carefully built of the Assala feminines — and despite its name, the jasmine is not the star.

— The opening is tart and green: lychee, rhubarb and grapefruit. Rhubarb is a rare note, frankly acidic and vegetal, which keeps the lychee from being too sweet. A crisp, lively start.

— The heart is floral but already dry: rose, peony and vetiver. Vetiver in the heart of a floral is unusual — it sets the dryness in place very early and gives the fragrance a grown-up bearing.

— The base is the most interesting part: incense, vanilla, musk and oakmoss. Oakmoss is the signature of the chypre family, that green, earthy structure you rarely find at this price, and the incense adds a resinous depth to it.

A daytime fragrance that holds through the evening, at its best in spring and autumn. It will suit someone who finds fruity florals too simple: this one has a real architecture. Two sprays.
