— The opening is warm: rum, vanilla orchid, jasmine. A sweet, warm, slightly burning entrance, which announces straight away that this will not be a well-behaved fragrance.

— The heart is a dessert table: vanilla, crème brûlée, tonka bean, plus a rose for the flower and spices the house does not specify. Crème brûlée is the caramelised sugar on top — the smell of a baked crust, not of raw cream.

— And the base is where the fragrance becomes interesting: patchouli, brown sugar, oud, sugar, musky amber. Patchouli is an earthy, slightly camphorous material, and its job here is precisely to cut the sugar. It is what keeps this fragrance from being only a pastry, and that is why it is in the name.

— The opening is a basket of soft fruits: mandarin, orange, pear, peach, with no aggressive acidity. It is round from the very first second.

— The heart is the real subject: magnolia, white peony, centifolia rose, violet wood. Centifolia rose is the hundred-petalled rose, the one from Grasse, the most expensive and the richest of the perfumery roses. The violet wood brings a powdery, woody note that gives the bouquet its bearing.

— The base is well thought out: vetiver, vanilla, praline, musk. The vetiver is there to keep the praline and the vanilla from turning into dessert. The result: a sweet fragrance that stays wearable at the office.

— The pink pepper in the opening gives it its sparkle. Turkish rose is the damask rose grown in Anatolia: more honeyed and more candied than the rose of Grasse, less powdery. It is the one you find in Middle Eastern perfumery.

— The raspberry in the heart heightens the jammy side without making it syrupy.

— The base is short but well chosen: white amber and papyrus. Papyrus is a dry, smoky material, close to vetiver and burnt reed — it is what keeps this rose from being only confectionery. It gives it a mineral, slightly bitter ending, and that is the whole interest of the bottle.
