Superbia is Memoize's rose-oud, and it is the one in the London range that best speaks the language of the Gulf.

— The opening is floral and opulent: rose, ylang-ylang and orchid. Ylang-ylang is a flower from the Comoros, creamy and almost banana-like; it thickens the rose from the very first second.

— The heart is woody and spiced: cedar, sandalwood and saffron. Saffron is oud's traditional companion in Gulf perfumery — leathery, a little metallic, lightly bitter.

— The base is the subject: oud, leather, amber, musk and patchouli. It is an oud wrapped in supple leather, not a raw oud.

An autumn and winter fragrance, for the evening, genuinely unisex.

This is an extrait de parfum from a London house sold at Harrods — the same accord played with a better instrument.

Eximus is Memoize's second rose-oud, more floral and brighter than Superbia.

— The opening is delicate: pear blossom and saffron. Pear blossom is a springtime note, white and lightly watery — far finer than the pear fruit.

— The heart is spiced and round: Turkish rose, clove, magnolia and sandalwood. Turkish rose is jammier than Bulgarian rose; the clove bites into it and keeps it from being sickly.

— The base is oriental: patchouli, oud, vanilla and musks.

An autumn and winter fragrance, for the evening, unisex with a feminine leaning.

Worth knowing: it is very close to Superbia from the same house — both are rose-ouds. The difference is the leather: Superbia has it, this one does not, and it is therefore more floral and smoother.

— The opening is green and milky: fig, coconut and bergamot. Fig in perfumery is as much the leaf as the fruit: green, milky, a little bitter. With the coconut, the effect is creamy without being sweet.

— The heart is salty: sea breeze, cardamom and cistus. Cistus is labdanum in its raw state — a Mediterranean resin that smells of vegetal leather and of sun-heated scrubland. It is what gives the fragrance its mineral roughness.

— The base is dry: saffron, sandalwood, musk and moss.
