Shaghaf Oud Royale

The driest and most grown-up of the Shaghafs.

— The lavender and the saffron open on something crisp, almost old-barbershop — a bitter-herb freshness rather than a citrus one.

— In the heart, the oud and the nutmeg take their place without detours. No fruit, no sugar to round things off: this is an unapologetically spiced oud, the one you look for when you already know the material.

— The musk and the patchouli in the base give it staying power and that smell of clean, warm fabric that stays on a collar.

Worth knowing before buying: this is the least consensual Shaghaf of the series. If you are discovering oud, start with the Ahmar or the Tonka. If you already wear oud, this is probably the one that will speak to you.

Cold season, and it works better in the evening than in the morning.

Long wear, moderate projection after the first hour — it works close to the skin.

— Then the tonka bean, the vanilla and the amberwood settle in for the evening — toasted almond, warm sugar, soft wood.

No aggressive oud despite the name: it is there to give the base body, not to cut through. Anyone buying this bottle is buying an almond-vanilla, and they will not be disappointed.

The blue bottle, and yet it is the warmest of the series.

— It opens straight onto honey and agarwood — a thick entrance, with no citrus phase, that tells you at once where you are going.

— The cinnamon and the Madagascan vanilla then lay down a thickness of spiced brioche.

— The leather in the base changes everything: it keeps the fragrance from becoming a dessert. It is that honey-leather tension which gives it its character — sweet up front, tanned behind.

Register: deep cold season. This is an overcoat fragrance. In the sun, the honey and the cinnamon become overwhelming; on a wool collar in January, they are exactly where they belong.

Long wear, sustained projection: two sprays are enough, three is already a lot.
