Club de Nuit Imperiale is the most carefully built feminine of the range: it starts on fruit and ends on wood.

— The opening is juicy and a little spicy: lychee, bergamot and nutmeg. Lychee is a rare note, floral and sweet at once, and it gives an immediately recognisable start.

— The heart is a rich bouquet: Turkish rose and peony, softened by musk and vanilla. Turkish rose is fresher and more lemony than Bulgarian rose — it is what keeps the whole thing from turning heavy.

— The base is what sets it apart: cashmeran, cedar, incense and vetiver. Cashmeran is a modern material with the touch of warm, musky wool, and together with the incense it gives this floral an unusual woody, resinous ending.

A late-day and evening fragrance, at its best in autumn and winter. It suits someone who finds fruity florals too simple: this one has a real structure. Two sprays.

Le Parfait Pour Femme is a white floral in the old manner: opulent and unapologetic.

— The opening is luminous: jasmine straight away, with mandarin and neroli. It is rare for a jasmine to appear right in the top notes — most fragrances save it for the heart — and it sets the tone immediately.

— The heart is a trio of powerful white flowers: honeysuckle, lily and tuberose. Tuberose is the most intense flower in perfumery, creamy and almost fleshy; the lily brings greenness and the honeysuckle honey.

— The base is warm and simple: amber, musk and patchouli. Its job is mainly to set the flowers down and make them last.

An evening fragrance, for autumn and winter, for someone who is happy to be noticed. To be honest: white flowers divide opinion — it is a family you either love or find heady, and there is no middle ground. One to two sprays are plenty. A large 200 ml bottle, so it lasts a very long time.

— The opening is dominated by saffron, softened by a discreet jasmine. The saffron is not sharp: it is leathery, lightly honeyed, and it gives the fragrance its character from the first second.

— The heart is the centre of gravity: amberwood and ambergris. Ambergris is one of the most precious materials in perfumery — warm, salty, enveloping — and it is what creates that warm-skin impression you notice on the great orientals.

— The base is dry and balsamic: fir resin and cedar. The fir resin brings a green freshness that keeps the whole from turning heavy, and the cedar gives it its backbone.

An autumn and winter fragrance, for the evening, and genuinely unisex — saffron and amber lean neither way. Two sprays; it has presence.
