El Dorado is the richest and most complex of the house — an extrait de parfum that resembles nothing else in the catalogue.

— The opening is disconcerting in the best sense: caramel, nutmeg, mandarin and cumin. Cumin is a spice almost nobody dares put in the top notes — warm, earthy, very oriental. Paired with the caramel, it creates an immediately recognisable sweet-spiced contrast.

— The heart is precious: ambroxan, saffron and violet. The ambroxan gives the impression of warm skin and carries far, the saffron brings its leathery facet, and the violet a powdery veil that softens the whole.

— The base is the most carefully built in the selection: leather, vanilla, akigalawood, white musk, moss and oud. Akigalawood is a molecule derived from patchouli that evokes oud with more clarity — here it accompanies the real oud instead of replacing it.

An evening fragrance, for autumn and winter, unisex. To be honest: cumin and oud together make an assertive register, and this is not a fragrance to give blind. But for someone who already knows oriental perfumery, it is a genuinely fine composition. One to two sprays.

Royal Blend Sequoia is the woody counterpart to Royal Blend Nero: the same aged-wood and candied-fruit spirit, but on red fruit instead of coffee.

— The opening is short and marked: raspberry, in a candied, syrupy version. It is the accord that signs the whole Royal Blend line — cooked fruit, not fresh fruit.

— The heart is sober: rose and moss. The rose brings just enough floral, and the moss already sets in the earthy greenness of the base.

— The base is the reason the fragrance exists: oak, praline and sandalwood. The oak brings that smell of aged wood and dry shavings. With the praline, it creates a roundness that is sweet and woody at once.

Liquid Brun is one of the best known of the house, and it deserves to be: a spiced gourmand that never falls into sugar.

— The opening is warm and aromatic: cinnamon and cardamom, lit up by bergamot and orange blossom. The two spices set the oriental tone immediately, and the two bright notes keep them from being stifling.

— The heart is short but precious: Bourbon vanilla and elemi. Bourbon vanilla is the roundest and creamiest; elemi is a peppery, lemony resin that lifts it. This duo is what gives the fragrance its texture.

— The base is dry and mineral: praline, ambroxan and guaiac wood. The ambroxan gives that warm-skin impression and carries the fragrance a long way; the guaiac dries the praline out so that it does not cloy.

An autumn and winter fragrance, for the evening, unisex. Projection is good and wear is long — two sprays are plenty.
